Today we celebrate the world mental health day.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has established for this year the theme “Mental health in the workplace”.

Society nowadays still doesn’t fully understand the importance of Mental Health. People still suffer from social stigma associated to diseases such as Depression, Anxiety, Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia, amongst others.

Some companies are starting to realize the importance of employee mental health, and are putting in place some initiatives to promote mental health. What these companies see is that employee effectiveness increases, and work absence decreases. This is the right way to go! By improving employee wellbeing, you are increasing your companies’ overall productivity!

However, this is not the case in all companies. Most of them strain their employees to the maximum, and then need to deal with issues of employee physical and mental health problems, use of substances or alcohol abuse, and loss of productivity.

Depression impacts worldwide 300 million people, and more than 260 million people suffer from anxiety disorders. Many of these people suffer from both depression and anxiety. These are highly debilitating disorders!

According to a recent WHO-led study, depression and anxiety disorders cost the global economy US$ 1 trillion each year in lost productivity.

Don’t forget to check the WHO website for more information on Mental Health, here.
